Morris, J., Y. Ran and J. Barron (2014). CLEANED – a new comprehensive framework for ex ante assessment of environmental impacts of livestock and aquaculture system interventions. SEI discussion brief.

The CLEANED framework is designed to help ensure that actions aiming to improve incomes and food security in livestock value chains have a minimum environmental footprint, while at the same time lifting people out of poverty. It focuses on environmental impacts and is meant to complement other more commonly applied assessments such as cost-benefit analyses and feasibility studies.

Development and testing of the CLEANED framework was led by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), with SEI, International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). It was mainly funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and co-funded by the Livestock and Fish CGIAR Research Program.
