High rates of climate change and its complex connections to a range of social and ecosystem changes will force society to continuously learn and adapt. Moreover, many of today’s environmental problems are both global and local in character. Learning thus has to connect across scale perspectives and governance levels.

Previous experiences highlight learning as a social process that is central to adaptive governance.

This project analyzes how the structure of the science-policy interface at the global level affects how different scale perspectives and knowledge traditions are integrated in international assessment processes relating to climate change and biodiversity. It will also study how international dynamics affect social learning in local contexts.
