Transforming vulnerable communities

Theme summary

Rapid social and environmental change threatens successful poverty alleviation. Unsustainable resource use traps communities in poverty. We're working to identify ways that vulnerable communities can build sustainable livelihoods.

Through innovations in governance and management at local and regional level, we present strategies to help communities break out of the poverty trap.

Decades of development efforts promoting incremental change of institutions and of policy measures for the delivery of basic human needs, have largely failed to lift the most vulnerable communities out of poverty.

Five years from the 2015 delivery year of the MDG target of halving hunger and poverty, nearly 1 billion people remain locked in hunger and absolute poverty.

Incremental change is no longer an option – big, transformative changes are needed to make a change to livelihoods – through innovations in governance and management at local and regional levels.

SEI helps to:
- advance knowledge on multiple drivers, shocks and stresses in relation to abrupt change and social crises

- provide the development arena with policy support and advice on how to attain sustainable livelihoods under high stress conditions

- integrate knowledge on vulnerability, resilience, adaptability and transformation to develop policy analyses and support for sustainable livelihoods

- develop strategies that help reach the ultimate MDG goal of eradicating poverty and hunger by 2030
