Description

Conference on Climate Adaptation in the Nordic Countries –science, policy and practice. Stockholm, 8-10 November 2010.

The conference is part of a larger project with the aim to set up a climate adaptation research network for the Nordic countries – NORDic Climate change Adaptation research Network (NORDCLAD-Net).

This project is enabled by a grant from Nordforsk, which SYKE (Finland), MILEN (Norge), Vestlandforking and KFT (Denmark) and SEI (Sweden) have gained in a joint application.

According to the NORDCLAD-Net research proposal, this conference would be the first large-scale adaptation research conference in the Nordic countries.

SEI will coordinate the conference in collaboration with the Swedish Mistra-SWECIA research programme. The conference will be held from the 8th to the 10th of November 2010, at the Stockholm University Aula Magna in Stockholm.

The expected number of participants is 150-300.

A special emphasis of the conference will be to explore the links between climate change adaptation research, policy and planning in the Nordic countries.

The latter implies that the conference will invite researchers from many different disciplines, but also policymakers and practitioners.

In this way the conference will represent three perspectives, that of:
- scientists

- policymakers who design the policy instruments

- practitioners who execute the policy. Each perspective will serve as a central theme on one of the three conference days. At the end of the conference, all themes will be brought together in a plenary discussion to ensure that linkages are made and lessons are drawn.

To organize the conference, we will set up three working groups. First, a formal scientific committee that is responsible for the general content and scientific quality of the conference. Second, an informal group of selected policymakers and practitioners that will work as a sounding board for the scientific committee with regard to the interests and involvement of practitioners' and policy makers' in the conference. Finally, an internal planning group at the SEI that handles the practical organization of the conference.

As a side-event, the NORDCLAD research school may be held in relation to the conference. This is because it will become easier to get quality lecturers to the PhD courses if they are in the vicinity.

Moreover, the conference could be made part of the course in which student assignments could contribute to the content of the conference.
