‘The Human Scene’: exploring what it means to live in the Anthropocene

SEI and the Swedish Royal DramaticTheatre are once again collaborating to blend science with the performing arts. Following the 3rd Nobel Laureate Symposium and För miljön i tiden, this project brings together researchers and performers to explore the form and pressures of the Anthropocene.

SEI and the Swedish Royal Dramatic Theatre are looking for researchers to participate in the project ‘The Human Scene’.

Apply by March 10! All work on the project is in Swedish. The project runs from April to December 2015.

Some scientists believe that we are now entering a new geological era, the Anthropocene, characterized by the dominance of humans on earth. For example, the extent to which we use the earth’s resources to ensure development and economic growth, is affecting fundamental systems (climate, water , ecosystems).
But what does it mean to live in the Anthropocene?

The climate, water scarcity and environmental degradation are increasingly global challenges that no longer can ignore. But the Anthropocene need not only be negative. If sicence and society sees that human development has become the decisive influence on the Earth’s systems, then we can also change course towards a more sustainable future.

‘The Human Scene’ will ask questions about well-being, morality, and how we handle complicated dilemmas. These are topics well suited for the theatre. And the performing arts are the central bringing together experts from diverse fields.

The goal of the project at this stage is to develop in-depth and innovative forms of collaboration between playwrights, performing artists and researchers. A public presentation will be staged at the Swedish Royal Dramatic Theatre on 7 December 2015.

We hope that this collaboration will, in its second phase, lead to a new Swedish theatrical performance that can be spread on different stages and among different theaters in the country.

SEI och Dramaten söker forskare till projektet ’Människans scen’, ett nytt samverkansprojekt mellan vetenskap och scenkonst.
Ansök senast 10 mars! Allt arbete i projektet sker på svenska.  Projektet pågår från april till december 2015.

Klimat- och miljöfrågorna med alla dess sociala och ekonomiska dimensioner är centrala för samhällets utveckling och hållbar tillväxt, liksom för oss människor och hur vi lever våra liv. Vissa forskare menar att vi nu går in i en ny geologisk era, antropocen, som kännetecknas av människans dominans på jorden. Men, vad innebär det då att leva i antropocen?

Klimathot, vattenbrist och miljöförstöring är allt mer globala utmaningar som ingen längre kan blunda för. Men inträdet i antropocen behöver inte bara vara negativt. Om människan har en avgörande påverkan på jordens olika system betyder det också att hon kan styra utvecklingen i en mer hållbar riktning.
Frågor om livsvillkor, moral och hur vi hanterar komplicerade dilemman är väl lämpade för teatern. Att få experter från olika områden och inriktningar att samarbeta är en annan utmaning där kulturen kan fungera som brygga.

Målet med projektet är att utveckla djupgående och nyskapande samarbetsformer mellan dramatiker och andra scenkonstnärer och forskare kring miljö- och utvecklingsrelaterade samhällsfrågor med människan i centrum.

Syftet är att samarbetet leder till nyskriven svensk dramatik som i nästa fas (2016 och framåt) kan spridas på olika scener och bland olika teatrar i landet. Fokus för detta projekt är dock själva processen och en djupdykning i frågornas innehåll som under arbetets gång leder fram till olika idéer till sceniskt framförande. En öppen redovisning inför publik kommer att genomföras på Dramatens den 7 december.

Vi söker deltagarna som vill ställa utmanande tankar kring etik och moral och bryta sådana mot varandra genom att till exempel lyfta fram paradoxer, dilemman och ge personliga reflektioner.
