SEI’s Executive Director Johan L. Kuylenstierna is participating in this unique art and science event on August 25th in Stockholm. In a short interview, Johan reflects optimistically on how to harness human creativity to provide solutions to climate change.

Q: Why is climate change an important issue?
A: Because climate change always hits the most vulnerable hardest. The climate system is fundamental for the earth and its ecosystems. They are all linked together which means that large-scale changes in one system will have knock on effects, with unpredictable results.

Q: What is the greatest source of hope in climate change?
A: The creativity of humans! And the fact our knowledge and understanding has reached a level where we can meet the climate challenge. Countries like China, India and USA are also doing more than we are perhaps aware of in tackling climate change. I am optimistic for the future; we have achieved changes within the energy sector that we couldn’t dream of 10 years ago.

Q: How do we meet the climate challenge?
A: There will need to be behavioral change at an individual level. New technology will also play an important role, as well as regional and global agreements. We must change how our cities are built, how our transportation systems are planned and how tax systems function. We need to remove subsidies for fossil fuels, invest in various forms of renewable energy sources, transform agriculture and and close the resource cycle. It is a big challenge, but most of the necessary action makes sense economically and can deliver better living standards.
