Mr Miliband along with Hugh Bayley, the MP for York visited the home of Kate Lock, a Green Streets mentor, to hear about her determined efforts to compost and how she is spreading advice to other York residents on how it easily it can be done.

Gary Haq, project leader on York Green Streets Challenge, explained to the two politicians the background to the campaign and how the carbon footprint of the communities was calculated using SEI's REAP Petite software tool.

York Green Streets Challenge is a year long campaign to encourage York neighbourhoods to cut their carbon emissions by 10% in 2010. Six Teams and up to 100 individuals will work alongside mentors to reduce their carbon emissions in the area of travel, waste and consumption of goods.
